On August 16, 2019 at 4:00 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle accident in the 4800 Block of 460th Avenue. A southbound 2004 Kenworth W9 semi, operated by Gerald Besch (47) of Mallard, IA., was pulling a 2019 Wilson flatbed trailer and was slowing to turn into driveway. A southbound 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van, being operated by Donald Seltz (88) of Fort Dodge, IA., did not see the semi slowing down. Seltz was unable to get stopped in time and struck the rear of the trailer.
Damage to the Seltz vehicle was estimated at $6,000. Damage to the 2019 Wilson trailer was estimated at $3,000. Seltz was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to a reasonable and proper rate, a simple misdemeanor. No injuries were reported at the scene. Assisting the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was the Mallard Fire Department, Mallard First Responders, Palo Alto County Ambulance Service, and Wickman Towing.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
