On 10/27/2017 at 3:19 a.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a grain wagon rollover that occurred in the 3900 block of 270th Street. Following an investigation at the scene, it was determined that a 2014 GMC Sierra owned and driven by Phillip Edward Schmitt, age 26 of Graettinger, was hauling two grain wagons and traveling east on 270th Street. During this harvest transport, a front passenger tire on the tailing wagon suffered a mechanical failure thus causing an axle failure and the wagon spilled and came to rest on its side. As a result, the load of soybeans was dispersed into the south ditch and onto the roadway. Schmitt was able to bring the vehicles to a halt without further damage to the GMC or other wagon. Estimated damages to the wagon are $1000.00. Approximately 140 bushels of soybeans were lost from the accident.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office.
