On 7/9/2015 at approximately 2:32 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Curtis Wilke, age 39 of Emmetsburg, on valid warrants out of Palo Alto County. The warrants: Theft 5th Degree issued April 8th, 2015, Theft 4th Degree issued April 17th, 2015, Contempt-Fail to Pay issued April 17, 2015 and Dominion/Control of Firearm/Offensive Weapon by a Felon. Collectively the warrants carry a cash only bond of $11,825.00. Wilke was transferred from Emmet County Authorities and transported to the Palo Alto County Jail, without incident. Wilke was unable to post the $11,825.00 bond and booked into the Palo Alto County Jail to await his appearance before a magistrate.
On 7/8/2015 at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aynslie Ladon Thorman, age 20, of Spencer, IA on a valid Palo Alto County warrant. The warrant, issued on 5/27/2015, is for Contempt of Court/Fail to Pay on an original charge of Possession of Alcohol under legal age. Thorman was transferred from Clay County Authorities and transported, without incident, to the Palo Alto County Jail. Thorman was booked into the Palo Alto County Jail, unable to post the $500.00 cash only bond and will wait for an appearance before a magistrate.
On 07-07-15 at approximately 4:20 a.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a truck that struck a calf that entered the roadway. A 2004 Kenworth T300 truck driven by Jonathan Owen Niece of Ankney, IA was heading south in the 3000 block of 420th Av. when he struck a calf that had gotten loose and entered the roadway. Niece was not able to avoid the calf. Damage to the truck was estimated at $1000 to the front guard on the truck. The calf, owned by Heather Ann Titus of Graettinger, IA died from the accident. The calf had an estimated value of $500. There were no injuries reported in this accident.
On 07-02-15 at approximately 10:00 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car / deer accident in the 4300 block of 360th St. west of Emmetsburg. A 2004 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Tanya Lee Zeman of Whittemore, was heading west in the above location when she struck a deer that entered the roadway. Damage was estimated at $5000 to the vehicle. No injuries were reported in this accident.
On Saturday June 27, 2015 at 4:46am the Palo Alto Sheriff’s Office received a report of a dispute at 302 S Jackson in Graettinger, IA. Deputies arrived and spoke to all involved.
Kevin Paul Wallin (37) of St. Peter, MN was placed under arrest for Serious Misdemeanor Trespassing. Wallin was transported to the Palo Alto County Jail where he was booked and released on a promise to appear citation for Trespass. Stephanie Ray Hanson (34) of Graettinger, IA tried to mislead the investigating deputy during his investigation and was subsequently cited for Interference with Official Acts, a Simple Misdemeanor.
On 06-30-15 at approximately 6:50 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a semi rollover at the intersection of 390th St. and 580th Av. in Palo Alto County at the county line with Kossuth County.
A 2007 Kenworth semi driven by Marty Ray Loken of Blue Earth, Minnesota was pulling a trailer loaded with hogs. He was heading west bound on highway 18 coming to the intersection of highway 15 where Kossuth County and Palo Alto County meet and was going to turn south on highway 15. Loken was unable to negotiate the turn properly and turned the semi and trailer over onto the passenger side.
Loken was checked out by the Whittemore Ambulance service and was not transported. He received minor injuries in this accident. The semi that he was driving had an estimated $15,000 damage. The trailer had significant damage and was a total loss as the top had broken open and some of the hogs got out. The roof of the trailer had to be removed to get the rest of the hogs out and transported by another truck and trailer.
Loken was cited for failure to maintain control. There were approximately 9 hogs lost in this accident. No other injuries were reported.

On 06/29/2015 the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jonathan David Matthew Sutherland, 30, of Ruthven on a valid Palo Alto County Mittimus Warrant. The 10 day mittimus warrant stems from the original charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Sutherland was already in the custody of the Palo Alto County Jail on unrelated charges.
On 06/29/2015 the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a two vehicle accident that had occurred in the 2700 block of 420th Avenue. Upon investigation it was determined that a 2014 Ford Fusion driven by Barbara Jean Croxdale of Ames was traveling northbound on 420th Avenue when she experienced a medical issue. The result of the medical issue caused Croxdale to rear end a 2012 GMC Savana driven by Lauren Ann Johnson of Mason City as she was attempting to make a right hand turn into the driveway at 2741 420th Avenue. The impact forced the GMC into the east ditch were it rolled once and came to rest back on its wheels. The Ford crossed the roadway and entered the west ditch where it came to rest. Johnson was treated for minor injuries on scene. Croxdale was transported by ambulance to Palo Alto County Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Both vehicles are considered a total loss. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office and the Palo Alto County Ambulance Service.
On June 6, 2014 at 12:50pm, The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated a car/deer accident 3 1/2 miles east of Ruthven on Highway 18.
A 2011 Nissan Sentra driven by Janet Griffin of Omaha , NE was driving west on Highway 18 and collided with a deer which entered the roadway from north ditch.
No injuries reported and damages to Nissan $4,900.
On Sunday June 28, 2015 at approximately 5:30am the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call that a naked women was walking on River Road toward Graettinger. Deputies arrived to find Jessica Mae Brennan (35) of Graettinger, IA walking westbound in the 4200 block of 290th St. After questioning Brennan about the situation, Brennan told the deputy she was just out for a walk. Brennan was found to be intoxicated and subsequently arrested for Public Intoxication which is a simple misdemeanor.
Brennan was transported to the Palo Alto County Jail where she was booked in to await her initial appearance before a judge.
