Arrest Warrant Served

On 7/29/15 the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Patrick Keith Johnson (46) of Curlew on a valid Palo Alto County Warrant for Driving While Barred an Aggravated Misdemeanor. Following his arrest, Johnson was unable to post the $6500.00 cash or surety bond and was booked into jail to await his intial appearance before a judge.

Assault

On Monday, July 27, 2015, at approximately 5:54 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call of an assault in progress at Sparky’s Convenient Store, in Mallard. Following an investigation into the incident, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aaron Krusen, 26, of Mallard for assault causing bodily injury= serious misdemeanor, and driving while suspended. Krusen was transported to the Palo Alto County Jail, without incident, and booked in to await his initial appearance before a magistrate.

 

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office has an ongoing investigation into this incident and more charges are pending on the second party involved.

Asphyxiation

On 7-25-2015 at 1:50 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call that two males were submerged in a hog manure pump pit at 3268 510 Ave. Fire Departments from Cylinder and Emmetsburg were dispatched as well as two Palo Alto County Ambulance from Emmetsburg.

 

Upon Sheriff’s Office arrival, Gene Opheim, age 58 of Cylinder, Ia., was pulled from the pump pit and life saving measures began. Austin Opheim, age 32 of Cylinder, was extricated from the manure pit by fire personnel and life saving measures began. Gene and Austin were transported by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital and both succumbed to their injuries.

 

The Opheim’s were making repairs to the manure pit at the time of the incident. Austin had entered the pit and was overcome by gases contained in the pit. Gene entered the pit in the attempt to rescue his son. 

Accident

On 07/24/2015 at approximately 3:18 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a two vehicle accident at the intersection of West Olive Street and North Jackson Avenue. Upon investigation it was determined that a 2001 GMC Savana driven by Lynn Therese Tatman of Graettinger was northbound on North Jackson Avenue when she collided with a westbound 2009 Chevy Impala driven by Katie Jo Cook of Spencer in the uncontrolled intersection. Damage to the GMC is estimated at $2,000.00 and damage to the Chevy is estimated at $8,500.00. There were no injuries reported on scene. Tatman was issued a citation for failure to yield to vehicle on the right.

10-50 Car/Deer

On 7/24/15 at approximatley 10:39 A.M. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was notified about a car/deer accident that happened in the 4500 Block of 420th Street. A 2005 Dodge Caravan driven by Michelle Mae Iwen of Emmetsburg was east bound in the 4500 Block of 420th Street when a deer ran out onto the roadway causing the Caravan to strike the deer. Damage to the Caravan was estimated at $1500.00

Car / Deer Accident

 

 

On 07-23-15 at around 9:25 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car / deer accident in the 4900 block of 280th St. east of Graettinger. A 2000 Ford Mustang owned and driven by David George Olesen of Fenton was heading east in the above location when he struck a deer that entered the roadway from the south ditch. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1500 to the passenger front side. No injuries were reported in this accident.

 

 

Accident – Car/Deer

On 07/23/2015 at approximately 2:14 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a one vehicle accident in the 4100 block of 360th Street. Upon investigation it was determined that a 2015 GMC Canyon driven by Justin Victor Malm of Emmetsburg was traveling eastbound on 360th Street when he struck a deer that had entered the roadway from the north ditch. Damage to the GMC is estimated at $6,500.00. No injuries were reported on scene.    

10-50 PD

On 7/20/15 at approximately 8:40 A.M. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a mail delivery truck that had backed into the Curlew Post Office. As Leland Dean Paterson, of Dakota City was backing a 2009 International box truck up to the rear of the Curlew Post Office, the top of the truck collided with the rear porch roof on the building, causing the porch roof to fall in. Damge to the roof was estimated at $1500.00. There was no damage to the truck. No citations were issued due to private property.

Accident

On Saturday, July 18th, 2015, at approximately 10:13 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a single vehicle accident in the 4800 block of 380th Street. Following an investigation into the incident, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office determined that Julynn Hesebeck, 16, of Emmetsburg was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer westbound in the 4800 block of 380th Street. Hesebeck lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle began to pull to the north shoulder. Hesebeck then over corrected in an attempt to gain control of the vehicle. Hesebecks vehicle slid sideways and entered the north ditch. Once entering the north ditch, the vehicle rolled once before coming to rest on the drivers side doors. There was an estimated $3000.00 damage done to the Chevrolet Blazer. Hesebeck and another passenger in the vehicle were transported by private vehicle to seek medical attention. Two other occupants in the vehicle did not seek medical attention. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office cited Hesebeck for failure to maintain control of the vehicle, which is a simple misdemeanor. 

Car vs Deer Accident

 On 7/19/2015 at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated a car vs. deer accident in the 5000 block of 460th Ave. It was determined that a 2013 Jeep owned and being driven by Nathan Lloyd Franksain, age 28 of Slater, IA, was southbound on 460th Ave in the 5000 block when a deer emerged from the east ditch. As this deer entered the roadway, the Franksain vehicle made contact with the deer causing $2000.00 in damages to the Franksain vehicle. There were no injuries reported in the accident.
