Burglary Charges and Search Warrant

On Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 7:25 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office served Dawn Vanderhoff (32) and Nathaniel Mefferd (33) both of Ruthven, Ia with valid Palo Alto County Arrest Warrants, original charge of Burglary 3rd Degree, a class “D” Felony. These charges stemmed from the burglary of the United States Post Office in Ruthven on 6-13-18. A search warrant was also executed in connection with this investigation after their arrest at 4:01 a.m. this same date on unrelated arrest warrants. The search of their residence at 1102 Merril Street in Ruthven was conducted at 9:14 a.m. this date where several itmes were seized. Vanderhoff and Mefferd were unable to post the additonal $10,000 cash only bond and remained in the Palo Alto County Jail where they currently await their initial appearance before a judge on their original charges.

Two Vehicle Accident

On 6/12/2018 at 8:53am, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two vehicle accident 6 miles west of Emmetsburg on Hwy 18. A 2015 Ford F250 pulling a loaded trailer, driven by Jeffery R. Cadwell age 33 of Ayrshire, was east bound in the 4100-Blk of 360st and lost control. Cadwell crossed the centerline of the road and collided with a west bound 2014 Freightliner which was pulling a loaded trailer, driven by Juan A. Huerta age 47 of Salina, KS. After the collision, the Ford entered the north ditch and came to rest. The Freightliner then pulled over to the side of the road.

Both drivers were checked by the Palo Alto County Ambulance and released. Damage to the Freightliner was estimated at $7,000.00 and the Ford was considered a total loss. Cadwell was cited for failing to yield half the roadway.

Assisting at the scene was the Emmetsburg Fire Department and Palo Alto County Ambulance.

Warrant Arrests

At 4:01 a.m. on June 13, 2018, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dawn Vanderhoff (32) of Ruthven, Ia. on two valid Palo Alto County Arrest warrants. The two arrest warrants were for original charges of Forgery = Class D felony which carried a $3,000 bond, and Forgery = Class D felony which carried a $10,000 bond. Vanderhoff was taken into custody and was held in the Palo Alto County jail.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office also arrested Nathaniel Meffered (33) of Ruthven, Ia. whom was with Vanderhoff. Meffered had three warrants for his arrest which included unauthorized use of a credit card = an aggravated misdemeanor, which carried a $6,500 bond, Forgery = Class D felony, which carried a $3,000 bond, Forgery = Class D felony, which carried a $10,000 bond. Meffered was taken into custody and held in the Palo Alto County Jail.

No Contact Order Violation

On Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at 5:00 pm, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated a violation of a protective order at the City Pool in Graettinger. Following the investigation, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew McGrauth (22), of Graettinger for violation of a protective order, simple misdemeanor. McGrauth was transported, without incident, to the Palo Alto County Jail and booked in to await his initial appearance before a magistrate. This incident is still under investigation and further charges are expected with other involved parties.

Warrant Arrest

On 06/11/2018 at 12:49 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joel Matthew Heisler, 35, of Ruthven on a valid Emmet County warrant for contempt of court for failing to appear at a child support hearing. Heisler was unable to post the $500.00 cash/ surety bond. Heisler was transported, without incident, to the county line where he was turned over to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office.

Two Vehicle Accident

On 6/7/2018 at 2:44 p.m. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call regarding a two vehicle accident with unknown injuries located at 2nd Avenue SW and 4th Street SW in West Bend. Upon an investigation into the accident, a 2010 Toyota Sequoia owned by Jordan and Heidi Knapp but driven by Heidi Knapp, age 43 of West Bend, was traveling north on 2nd Avenue SW. A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado owned and driven by Ervin Melvin Thilges, age 70 of West Bend, was traveling west on 4th Street SW. As a result of failing to yield the right of way, the Knapp vehicle struck the Thilges vehicle in the intersection. The collision caused an estimated $7000.00 worth of damages to the Knapp vehicle and $5000.00 worth of damages to the Thilges’ vehicle.

Knapp was issued a citation for failing to yeild the right of way from a stop sign. There were no reported injuries as a result of the accident. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the West Bend Fire Department and the Palo Alto County Ambulance Service.

Single Vehicle Accident

On June 5, 2018 at 10:05am, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated a one vehicle rollover 1/3 of a mile south of Ruthven on 350 Ave.

A 2009 Chevy Impala driven by Lucien James Benedix age 16 of Ruthven was southbound in the 3600-blk of 350th Ave and was traversing a curve. Benedix lost control of the Impala and then over corrected and slid into the west ditch, and rolled. The Impala came to rest on its wheels in the ditch.

Benedix was checked out by the Emmetsburg Ambulance, and was released. Damage to the Impala was estimated at $6000.00. Benedix was issued a citation for Failure to Maintain Control of Vehicle.

Semi Rollover Accident

On Friday, June 01, 2018 at 4:04 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to the intersection of 310th Street and 470th Ave for a report of a semi-trailer roll-over. Upon investigation, it was determined that Joseph Joyce (77) of Emmetsburg was driving a 2016 Peterbilt 999, owned by Patrick Joyce, northbound in the 3100 Block of 470th Ave. As Joyce attempted to turn into the 4600 Block of 310th Street the rear axle of the trailer entered the ditch, which initiated a roll-over onto its driver’s side. Joyce was uninjured in the incident and estimated damages to the semi and trailer are $150,000, a total loss. Joyce was cited for failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Palo Alto County Ambulance Service.

Motorcycle Deer Accident

On 06/01/2018 at 2:31 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a motorcycle deer accident in the 4400 block of 420th Street. Upon investigation it was determined that a 2008 Harley Davidson driven and owned by Kevin Lee Gilman, 59, of Emmetsburg was westbound on 420th Street when a deer emerged from the north ditch. Gilman struck the deer in the roadway. Following the impact, Gilman was thrown from the motorcycle coming to rest in the north ditch. The motorcycle entered the north ditch coming to rest in the ditch.

Gilman was transported Palo Alto County Hospital by the Palo Alto County Ambulance Service. Damage to the Harley Davidson is estimated at $12,000.00. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Palo Alto County Ambulance Service.

Drug Arrest

On Wednesday, May 30th, 2018, at 10:30 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in the 3600 block of 5th Street, Emmetsburg, on a white 2003 Ford F-150, driven by Matthew Gagen (28), of Bode. During the traffic stop, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated Gagen for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. Following the investigation, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office arrested Gagen for possession of controlled substance 3rd offense= class D felony; possession of drug paraphernalia= simple misdemeanor; and operation without registration= simple misdemeanor. Gagen was also issued a warning for failure to provide financial responsibility coverage. Gagen was transported, without incident, to the Palo Alto County Jail and further testing was conducted while investigating Gagen for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Gagen was then booked into the Palo Alto County Jail to await his initial appearance before a magistrate.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Emmetsburg Police Department and Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.
