At 11:04 p.m. on June 8, 2019, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was called to 408 South Sixth Street in Mallard to take a report of a motor vehicle accident. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office learned a 2005 Ford F-150, owned by Nevin Bailey, was rolled on to the driver’s side on North Fifth Street in Mallard.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was advised once the vehicle was rolled, three occupants exited the vehicle. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office discovered Alan Schwidder (28) of Emmetsburg, IA. was operating the pickup at the time of the accident. Schwidder would flee the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Two passengers in the vehicle were identified as Austin Mammen (20) of Ruthven, IA. and Nevin Baily (19) of Laurens, IA. Mammen and Bailey walked to a relative’s residence in Mallard to report the accident. Schwidder was picked up by a friend and fled the area. Mammen was transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital by a relative. Bailey complained of injuries and was ultimately transported by the Emmetsburg Ambulance Service to the Palo Alto County Hospital. Both Mammen and Bailey were treated and released from the Palo Alto County Hospital for injuries.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office secured arrest warrants for Alan Schwidder for leaving the scene of an accident – injury, a serious misdemeanor, driving while suspended, a simple misdemeanor, and reckless driving, a simple misdemeanor.
On June 13, 2019 Schwidder would turn himself in to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office on his warrants. Schwidder was unable to post the $1,700 cash only bond and was booked into the Palo Alto County Jail.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Emmetsburg Police Department, Mallard First Responders, Emmetsburg Ambulance Service, and Wickman Towing.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
