On Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 8:47 p.m., the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a single vehicle accident with unknown injuries in the 4700 block of 280th Street near Graettinger. After investigation into the incident, it was determined Autumn Smart (25) of Welcome, MN., was eastbound on 280th Street, operating a 2003 Mercury Sable, when a severe thunderstorm was occurring in the area. Smart advised the blowing dirt caused blackout conditions and she was unable to see the roadway while driving. Smart’s vehicle entered the south ditch striking a turning trucks sign. Damage to Smart’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to the sign owned by Palo Alto County was estimated at $500. No injuries were reported at the scene.

Assisting the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office at the scene was the Graettinger Ambulance Service, Graettinger Fire Department, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.
